 Im 19. Jahrhundert entstand eine Overland-Route nach Indien, die eigentlich keine war, sondern so nur genannt wurde im Unterschied zur Seeroute um Afrika. Diese Overland-Route begann mit einer Schiffreise von Marseille nach Alexandria, dann über Land bis Suez und von dort wieder mit dem Schiff nach Bombay.
